The Psych of Color in Interior Design

Everyday of our lives we utilize spaces for one reason or another. Despite our careers, an indoor space is something that we cannot live without. Every space we get into, has a function to play, whether its eating, sleeping, entertaining, cooking, working etc. These spaces form a very core foundation of how the human mind perceives purpose and function. A space is not complete until a function is defined. Color defines 70% of the functionality and purpose of a space. It has the ability to allow the mind and body to react, it is powerful enough to influence ones mood, mental state and physiological reactions. Certain colors have been associated with increased metabolism, eyestrain, decreased blood pressure. Colors with a shade tone have a mixture of black in them which increases the darkness, these colors are navy blue, maroon, jungle green, whereas colors with a tint in them have a mixture of white which increases brightness, these are pink, light green, sky blue. Through these two variations of a shade and a tint, colors will have a certain hue intensity that brings out the effects of a space. The intensity projected brings about what we interior designers call, warm colors and cool colors.

Warm colors have the effect of giving a space warmth, brightness, excitement, increased appetite and add a sense of intimacy by making the room feel cozier and closer while cool colors tends to make a space feel; cold, serene, refreshed, clean & crisp as well as recedes the room by making it feel bigger.

It is important to understand what colors work for your space, some colors can have a personal trauma effect depending with your history and experience. The type of lighting in your space is a fundamental factor as well in aiding the intensity of a color to be defined, natural lighting brings out the best color variations while artificial lighting can alter the intensity of a hue depending on how yellow or white tint intensity it has.
